WAX

On old bohas, the pihet, the brunidéir, the stump of the pihet, the stump of the wind-holder as well as the wind-holder are made of wood. These different parts are often decorated. Some copies have been decorated with drawings made with wax.

In principle the wax used is that which served to seal the folds or the documents which had to be sealed with affixing of a seal. Some, like Patrice Bianco, who studied these bagpipes in the 1970s think that the wax could have been replaced by paste to seal the barrels.
The wax used is red.

To make this type of decoration, we can observe on the examples found that the wax is applied to drawings made beforehand by sculpting deep enough into the wood.

The technique of applying the wax to the designs already carved is not known. We certainly dripped the hot wax on the sculpture and then spread it quickly to make it penetrate as well as possible into the drawing. This wax certainly had to be reheated to remove the smudges and give a cleaner look to the drawing.
