REALIZATION OF A TIN REED BODY

Warnings:
1) the word tin; used in this document covers both lead and tin itself because it is difficult to distinguish with the naked eye. As the reeds found are museum pieces, this analysis remains difficult to carry out because taking samples could damage them.
2) the operations described in this sheet must be carried out in accordance with the safety rules. Use gloves and a leather apron for your manipulations, avoid flip-flops, wear protective glasses and especially work in a ventilated environment to melt the tin, possibly wear a mask. This list is not exhaustive and it is your responsibility to take all necessary measures to avoid an accident.

Problem: how to use tin to make the body of a simple reed?

Objective: to reproduce the reed bodies with lamellae reported identically to those which were on the bohaussacs such as those of Jeanty Benquet or even of Jean Blanchard.

Realization: to start, you need a wooden cube 5cm high and about 7cm square. Drill this block right through several holes with a diameter of 9 mm in the direction of the height. Fix a board under this block of wood to prevent the tin from leaking during the molding.

Then, melt some tin in a container then pour it into each hole to the brim and let cool.

Remove the board which blocked the holes then, using a metal rod 7 mm in diameter and a hammer, unmold the cylinder thus obtained.

Position the cylinder thus obtained on a drill press or a lathe to drill it over its entire length to a diameter of 4.7 mm. Here we use a low speed lathe. The ideal is around 300 rpm. Otherwise the tin may melt and block the forest.

Once the bore has been made, position the cylinder on the lathe between centers and reduce it to a diameter of 7mm. This makes it possible to recenter the bore and obtain a diameter exterior adapted to position the reed in its housing on the pihet.

Then, to make the flat area that will receive the reed tongue, you can use a mini-milling machine with a tool with a width of 4 mm. It is also possible to do so with a file.

Last step, to shed light on the flat area that we have just made, use a model maker tool equipped with a mini-disc to cut.

This is how to make a reed body with attached lamella starting from a tin ingot (see: section on materials) to arrive at a reed of the same type as that of the bohaussacs mentioned at the beginning of this text. The plan of these reeds appears in the book "Presentation of the results of the ancient Bohas project".

Note: The are produced by a reed with a tin body is as bright as that produced by a reed with a reed body or composite materials. Only the timbre differs.
