BdG-2011-1 - BENQUET

Jeanty Benquet

Guillaume Justin "Jeanty" Benquet known as "lou Tcha-tchou" or "lou Tric" was born in 1866, on April 13 at Tric, in Pindères in what is now Lot et Garonne. As shown in the birth extract below, the indication "born in 1870 in Pindères" found in some works is erroneous.

Jeanty Benquet

He plays bohaussac at local festivals. Then, after his marriage, he moved to a district of Bazas (33) where he played in particular for the 1927 Félibrée. He performs regularly with the local folk group "Lous Bazadès". The many services of this set take him, among others, to the cities of Nice, Paris and Bordeaux. In London in 1937, he will accompany the group alone.

Jeanty Benquet was left-handed. There is a wax disc dating from 1934 with three of his interpretations as well as a Pathé-Gaumont film whose sound has unfortunately been erased.

Jeanty Benquet
He died in 1957 in Cazats (33) at the age of 87. With him goes the last routine bohaire.

His Bohaussac

His instrument, presented on this site, is almost complete. It only lacks the tool attached to the chain of the removable extension of the Brunidèir visible in some photos. The leather bag was absent during the 2011 surveys, it was found during the sale of the instrument by Dominique Bougé in 2018.

boha-Benquet

It still exists :

- the red velvet bag cover decorated with fringes of the type used for military uniforms. Two are visible in the archive photos,
- the left-handed pihet in boxwood reddened by time,
- the two simple reeds with a reed insert on a tin support,
- the stump of the cow horn pihet,
- the removable Brunidèir extension inlaid with pewter and connected to the pihet by a silver chain of the type found on pocket watches,
- the boxwood blowpipe (bohet),
- the stump of the blowpipe encrusted with tin.

This instrument, studied on September 19, 2011 by Patrick Burbaud, is currently part of a private collection after having been kept by Dominique Bougé, bagpipe postman and collector in St Vran (22).

These surveys were carried out in St Vran in the presence of Dominique Bougé and Michelle Burbaud.
